Dessources carries @yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball to CUNYAC Championship berth

York College is back in action next Saturday (Feb. 22) as the No. 5 seed in its return to CUNYAC Championship play for the first time since the 2015-16 season


BROOKLYN --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball reached double-digit wins for the first time since the 2010-11 season Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn with a 72-38 CUNYAC triumph against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (6-17, 2-11 CUNYAC) inside Cougars Cave.  The season sweep of Medgar Evers is York's 11th in as many years and are primed to take the court next Saturday (Feb. 22) as the No. 5 seed in a return to CUNYAC Championship play for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign. York (10-14, 7-7 CUNYAC) is slated to travel for first-round action against the Baruch College Bearcats (14-9, 8-6 CUNYAC).  The official CUNYAC Championship seeds will be announced Wednesday.   

Trailing 4-0, Mac-Dege Dessources scored six of York's next 10 points as part of a 10-4 spurt to take the lead for good, 10-8, with 6:35 showing on the first-quarter clock. York went up by seven in the opening stanza and played with a double-digit lead (28-17) for the remainder of the game at the 7:02 mark in the second period with a layup by Dessources for two of her 13 first-half points.  Kristina Sierra landed a 3-pointer with 1:51 left to push York's lead to 19 for a 38-19 advantage at the break.  

York held a 20-point lead for the final 12:20 off a Destiny Drummond layup by with 2:20 remaining in the third quarter to make it a 49-28 game.  The Cardinals outscored Medgar Evers by 14 in the final stanza as a layup from Lizabeth Nunez extended York's lead to a game-high 34 points to settle the 72-38 final.  

Dessources carried York to victory with her 14th double-double of the season (26th career), finishing with 21 points (10-of-13 FG), 14 rebounds and one block.  Drummond, Ellma Hodzic and Keyla Cabrera each scored eight points. Drummond added four assists and a career-high four steals to her statline while Hodzic swatted two shots and Cabrera pulled-down nine boards.  Nunez and Sierra both dished out five assists and Cami Melson chipped in with eight rebounds.  

Cyndi White led Medgar Evers with 16 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.  Destiny Simmons followed with 14 points.   

York connected on 41.3 percent from the field (31-of-75), 16.7 from 3-point land (2-of-12) and 53.3 percent from the free-throw line (8-of-15) as Medgar Evers shot 21 percent from the floor (13-of-62), 13.3 percent from deep (2-of-15) and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe (10-of-12).  The Cardinals owned a +20 rebounding margin (57-37), scoring 19 second-chance points off 22 offensive boards. York outplayed the Cougars in assists (20-9), steals (9-5), blocks (6-3), points in the paint (52-10), points off turnovers (28-4) and bench scoring (28-0).
