www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball scored six-unanswered points to close out Wednesday's game with a 74-66 road win over the City College of New York Beavers (3-20, 2-10 CUNYAC) inside Nat Holman Gymnasium. The season sweep of the Beavers is York's first since the 2014-15 campaign.
In a first half that saw both teams combine for three lead changes and three ties, CCNY was the aggressor early on by racing out to a 15-6 advantage 6:23 in. York chipped away to erase its nine-point deficit and scored 24 of the game's next 39 points.
Jaye Bookhart drilled a pair of treys and
Jean-Luc Etienne sank a 3-pointer during a 9-3 spurt to push York in front for its first lead of the game (30-29) with 60 seconds left in the half. Both teams traded baskets in the final minute as York held on for the 32-31 lead at the break.
York played with the lead for a stretch of 6:28 as Bookhart scored eight points during that span highlighted by a triple at the 13:32 mark that built a five-point cushion (46-41). Both teams traded leads, and with 5:08 showing on the second-half clock,
Donald Hartley, Jr.'s free-throw broke a tied game (58-58) to give York the lead for good (59-58). York outscored CCNY by eight (16-8) in the final 5:08 and scored six-unanswered points while keeping the Beavers off the scoreboard for the remaining 1:30 of play to secure the win.
Hartley, Jr. erupted for 24 points, six rebounds and a career-high five steals to guide York to victory. Bookhart scored eight of his 16 points (4-of-4 3FG) in the second half and
Mambe Koureissi followed with 14 points (5-of-11 FG, 4-of-4 FT), eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Devine Chisholm tallied nine points and six assists, and
Guillermo Hernandez pulled-down a career-high 12 rebounds and added six points to the win.
Yassine Sakhi scored a game-high 27 points (10-of-18, 3-of-6 3FT, 4-of-5 FT) and grabbed seven rebounds to pace CCNY. Isaiah Denard followed with 16 points and Daniel Piszczatowski tallied 14.
In the end, York shot 45 percent from the field (27-of-60), 44.4 from 3-point territory (8-of-18) and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line (12-of-18) as CCNY hit 43.6 percent from the floor (24-of-55), 25 percent from long distance (5-of-20) and 68.4 percent from the charity stripe (13-of-19). The Cardinals outrebounded CCNY by 13 (43-30) while the Beavers scored 13 second-chance points off eight offensive boards. York owned the Beavers in steals (10-8), blocks (4-3) and points in the paint (32-26) while CCNY outplayed the Cardinals in assists (16-14) and points off turnovers (17-16).
With just one game remaining in the regular season, the Cardinals (8-16, 4-9 CUNYAC) currently hold the No. 6 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Championship. York will look to secure its return to postseason play for the first time since 2015-16 with a Saturday (Feb. 15) matchup in Brooklyn against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (6-16, 2-10 CUNYAC) at 3 p.m. inside Cougars Cave.
