JAMAICA, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball grabbed a first-half lead and never looked back Monday evening at home to win their second-game in a row with a 74-59 triumph over the College of Staten Island Dolphins (4-9) inside York College Gymnasium.
In a first half that saw seven lead changes early on,
Akil Vaughn dropped in a layup at the 12:44 mark to put York ahead for good, 17-15. Moments later,
Jaye Bookhart dialed in from long distance to ignite a key run that featured five 3-pointers from four different Cardinals to put York up by 17 (41-24) at intermission.
Playing ahead for the final 32:44, York grew its lead to a game-high 19 points (43-24) to open the second-half scoring with Vaughn's layup 2:41 in. York maintained its double-digit lead for the entire second half as Staten Island got as close as 10 before the Cardinals closed out the final 58 seconds with a 9-4 spurt.
Bookhart went for a career-high 23 points (7-of-16 FG, 3-of-6 3FG, 6-of-6 FT) to lead York to victory.
Devine Chisholm added 15 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals while
Donald Hartley, Jr. tallied 10 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Vaughn finished with nine points, 14 rebounds and a career-high five blocks to solidify the paint.
Staten Island was led by Adeola Latunji's game-high 30 points (11-of-26 FG, 5-of-5 FT) to go with eight rebounds, five blocks and two steals.
York made a season-high 11 3-pointers to shoot 47.8 percent from long distance (11-of-23) while landing 32.4 percent from the field (24-of-74) and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line (15-of-21). Staten Island was limited to 29.6 percent shooting from the floor (21-of-71), 25 percent from deep (8-of-32) and 69.2 percent from the charity stripe (9-of-13). The Cardinals held a season-best +14 edge in rebounding (59-45) and scored 17 second-chance points off 17 offensive boards. York also outplayed the Dolphins in assists (16-14) and steals (7-6) while Staten Island finished with the advantage in blocks (13-7), points in the paint (22-20) and points off turnovers (14-9).
The Cardinals (5-8, 1-2 CUNYAC) conclude their seven-game homestand Wednesday (Jan.8) at 7:30 p.m. with a CUNYAC showdown against the City College of New York Beavers (0-12, 0-3 CUNYAC) inside York College Gymnasium.
