Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Pair of double-digit scorers pace @yorkcardinals Women’s Basketball against Brooklyn

York College travels Tuesday (Jan. 28) for a CUNYAC matchup against Hunter College

JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball kept it close in the opening quarter Friday evening but were unable to keep pace with the first place Brooklyn College Bulldogs (12-5, 7-0 CUNYAC) in a 75-41 CUNYAC setback to close out a brief two-game homestand inside York College Gymnasium.

Brooklyn jumped ahead for good with a quick 6-0 lead 1:36 in before Dayana Jacome dropped in a layup to put York on the board at the 7:19 mark.  The Cardinals battled to pull within one on two separate occasions in the opening stanza prior to Brooklyn outscoring York by six in the final 1:55 to lead by seven (18-11) at the end of the first period.  After committing just two turnovers in the first quarter, York was pressured into 12 miscues over the next 10 minutes, leading to Brooklyn scoring 13 points off turnovers. York got as close as seven in the second period before Brooklyn constructed a 13-0 run to extend its lead to 20 points (35-15) 1:28 before the break.

York was outscored by 11 in the third quarter and three in the final stanza as the Bulldogs grew their lead to a game-high 43 points (71-28) with an 18-1 spurt with 5:55 showing on the fourth-quarter clock.  The Cardinals responded with a 13-4 run to close out the final 5:37 captained by Ellma Hodzic's seven points during that stretch.

Hodzic poured in a team-best 15 points to go with six rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 38 minutes of action.  Mac-Dege Dessources contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and a game-high three blocks. Kayla Cabrera reeled in eight rebounds while Diamond Jackson grabbed seven off the bench.  Jackson and Kristina Sierra each nabbed two steals.

Chanel Jemmott logged 26 minutes to produce a game-high 26 points (11-of-19 FG) and 19 rebounds for Brooklyn.  Sarah James scored 11 points and Kayla Trembone added 10.

In the end, York shot 30.8 percent from the field (16-of-52), 9.1 percent from 3-point range (1-of-11) and 47.1 percent from the free-throw line (8-of-17) as Brooklyn landed 34.5 percent from the floor (29-of-84), 22.2 percent from beyond the arc (8-of-36) and 81.8 percent from the charity stripe (9-of-11).   Brooklyn outrebounded York by 13 (55-42) and scored 18 second-chance points off 24 offensive boards. York outplayed Brooklyn in blocks (7-2) while the Bulldogs held the advantage in assists (23-11), steals (15-16), points off turnovers (27-7) and bench scoring (25-6).

The Cardinals (6-11, 3-5 CUNYAC) travel Tuesday (Jan. 28) to Manhattan for a CUNYAC showdown against the Hunter College Hawks (10-8, 6-2 CUNYAC) at 5 p.m. inside Hunter Sportsplex.
