PURCHASE, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball started out strong Wednesday evening but were unable to outlast the Purchase College Panthers (1-0) in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-18) non-conference road loss from Purchase College Gymnasium.
The Cardinals hit .200 for the opening set with 10 kills on 30 swings before finishing the match at a .034 clip. Purchase hit at a rate of .203 and held the advantage in points (48-28), kills (29-19), aces (18-7), assists (27-18) and digs (50-36) while York outplayed the Panthers in blocks, 2-1.
Shamonie Miller led the Cardinal attack with a career-high seven kills as
Alessandra Villota followed with personal bests of six kills, eight digs and two aces for eight points.
Chrissy Hobson posted career highs with four aces (career-high) and two solo blocks to total eight points while
Kiara Gonzalez directed the offense with 15 assists.
Dorianny Rojas also scooped a career-high 11 digs.
Esmee Johns moved the Purchase offense with a match-high 26 assists while Gia Gwin nailed down 10 kills.
York (1-1) returns to action September 14 with a tri-match to open its home slate against the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (0-1) at 10 a.m. and later tangle with the Medgar Evers College (0-2) Cougars for a CUNYAC opener at 2 p.m. inside York College Gymnasium. Medgar Evers and St. Joseph's will meet for the 12 p.m. match.
