NEW LONDON, CT --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's soccer tied a season-high with eight shots and six attempts on goal Saturday afternoon but were unable to keep pace with the host Mitchell College Mariners (3-5-0), falling 7-0 from Alumni Field in New London, Connecticut.
The Cardinals were the aggressor early on as
Gisselle Flores-Barajas' corner kick directed
Denise Tasipanta for the game's initial shot 22 seconds in. Mitchell then replied at 2:45 with the game-winning goal Lindsey Fairbank to beat Cardinal goalie
Chelsea Vasquez (0-7-0) for the 1-0 lead. York refused to back down as Flores-Barajas took two out of the team's next-three shots over the next 2:25. Vasquez was tested with six shots from 5:57 to 12:32 until Fairbank doubled Mitchell's advantage in the 19th minute. The Mariners added their third goal with 15 seconds left in the half to stretch their lead to three at the break.
With a pair of goals scored on Cardinal backup goalie
Ina Okoro in the opening 2:11 of second-half play, Fairbank extended Mitchell's lead to six in the 50th minute with her third goal of the game. Vasquez came out of goal to play the field, where she put two shots on target in the 51st and 70th minutes.
Vasquez stopped four shots and Okoro added one save while Yordi Slover and Lindsey Robinson combined to make six saves for Mitchell's shutout.
Mitchell finished the match with the advantage in shots (19-8), shots on goal (12-6) and corner kicks (6-4).
The Cardinals (0-7-0, 0-1-0 CUNYAC) are back home next Saturday (Oct. 5) for a CUNYAC showdown with the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (2-6-1, 1-2-0 CUNYAC) at 12 p.m. from Knights Field on the campus of Queens College in Flushing, New York.
