NEW YORK --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) Despite trailing by just one goal at intermission, York College men's soccer got off to a slow start offensively and were unable to recover Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals faced a 4-0 setback to the College of Staten Island Dolphins (3-3-1) from Randall's Island Park Field 81.
After the Dolphins put up 13 shots,
Hans Merilan hit the crossbar in the 39th minute to break York into the shot column. The Cardinals held a 3-2 edge in shots over the final 6:20 of play in the opening stanza with attempts from
Frank Macapagal and
Shemar Green. A costly York foul in the box set Jahmali Peterson up for a penalty kick that was converted at 41:14 for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
The Dolphins picked up right where they left off as Joe Bolella finished a run from Chris Vendra to double Staten Island's advantage (2-0) in the 58th minute.
Marvin Mondesir took both of York's second-half attempts prior to being held shotless for the final 22 minutes. A pair of Staten Island goals beat Cardinal netminder
Jasper McLeod (1-8-0) in the 79th and 88th minutes to settle the 4-0 final.
McLeod turned away seven shots in total while Jake Foeldes (2-3-1) and Cristian Carucci combined for Staten Island's shutout.
In the end, the Dolphins outplayed York in shots (27-5), shots on target (11-0) and corner kicks (13-3).
The Cardinals (1-8-0, 0-1-0 CUNYAC) are back in action Wednesday (Oct. 2) with a CUNYAC showdown on the road against Baruch College Bearcats at 5 p.m. from Randall's Island Park Field 10.
