@yorkcardinals Women’s Volleyball tames Gators for non-conference sweep

York College returns to the court on October 12 with a CUNAYC tri-match on the road against Brooklyn College and CCNY


JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball produced a pair of non-conference wins Friday evening with straight-set triumphs against the Pine Manor College Gators (0-5) inside York College Gymnasium.

Match 1: York 3, Pine Manor 0 (25-5, 25-10, 25-15)
Shamonie Miller served York to 10-straight points to open the first set as the Cardinal fired away at a clip of .455 during the opening stanza.  The Cardinals led 17-1 with six-straight service points by Alexandra Taveras to spark York in the first set. York finished the opening match hitting .303 and dominated the Gators in hitting percentage (.303 to -.227), points (40-9), kills (17-4), aces (23-5) and assists (16-4) while both teams drew even in digs (9-9) and blocks (0-0).  

Taveras finished with a match-high 10 points to lead York with 11 assists, seven aces and three kills.  Miller followed with nine points on six aces and three kills while Alessandra Villota (5 kills, 3 aces) and Chrissy Hobson (4 kills, 3 aces) added eight and seven points, respectively.  

Candecia Brown paced Pine Manor with three aces.

Match 2: York 3, Pine Manor 0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-13)
Taveras sparked the Cardinals to 11-straight points by serving seven aces during the stretch to stake York to an early cushion.  York attacked at .375 in the first set before recording a .138 hitting percentage for the match compared to Pine Manor's -.207. The Cardinals outplayed Pine Manor in points (42-16), kills (13-7), aces (29-9), assists (11-6) and digs (8-7).

Leading the Cardinals to victory was Taveras, who posted a career-high 19 points and 15 aces while nailing down four kills.  Dorianny Rojas collected seven points on four aces as Hobson (3 kills) and Villota (3 aces) each chipped in four points.

Brown racked up a team-best six points for the Gators. 

The Cardinals (5-6, 1-2 CUNYAC) return to action next on October 12 with a CUNAYC tri-match on the road starting at 12 p.m. against the CCNY Beavers followed by the Brooklyn College Bulldogs at 2 p.m. from West Quad Center in Brooklyn.
