STATEN ISLAND --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's soccer jumped out to an early lead for the second time in third games, but were unable to hold the lead Wednesday as the College of Staten Island Dolphins replied with four-unanswered goals to down the Cardinals, 4-1, from CSI Soccer Complex in Staten Island.
The Cardinals wasted little time breaking the scoring ice as
Gisselle Flores-Barajas netted a goal in the opening minute for the second time this season. Flores-Barajas sank a kick from the left side that bounced off the right post to beat Dolphin goalie Samantha Beaudreault (3-3-0) for the 1-0 lead. The tally was Flores-Barajas' team-leading third goal of the season.
Staten Island answered three minutes later with Samantha LaValle gathering a rebound from the Cardinal defense to put the equalizer past
Chelsea Vasquez (0-6-0). The Dolphins went up by one in the 15th minute as Nicole Mignone struck for the game-winning goal that made it a 2-1 contest heading into intermission.
Mirsade Pelinkovic settled the 4-1 final with second-half goals in the 60th and 74th minute to push the Dolphins to victory.
Vasquez stopped 13 shots and Beaudreault faced one shot in between the pipes.
Staten Island finished with the advantage in shots (40-1), shots on goal (17-1) and corner kicks (10-0).
The Cardinals (0-6-0) remains on the road Saturday (Sept. 28) for a non-conference matchup against the Mitchell College Mariners (2-5-0) from Alumni Field in New London, Connecticut.
