www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's soccer answered late but were unable to overcome a first-half deficit Sunday afternoon in a 5-1 non-conference setback against the Maritime College Privateers (1-0-0) from Reinhart Field in Throggs Neck, New York.
York (0-2-0) goalie
Chelsea Vasquez (0-2-0) was tested early and often by the Privateers, defending eight shots in the opening 8:49.
Gisselle Flores-Barajas answered 1:24 later with a shot on target to break the Cardinals into the shot column. After Vasquez turned away two more shots, Brianna Etienne found the back of the net in the 20th minute to steak Maritime a 1-0 lead. Etienne doubled Maritime's advantage with the game-winning goal in the 28th minute to go up 2-0 before Gayle Woods sent a 3-0 game into intermission with a score in the 34th minute.
Flores-Barajas put up attempts in the 26th and 37th minutes as Maritime owned a 20-3 edge in shots during the first period.
After Privateer tallies in the 83rd and 87th minutes, Flores-Barajas netted York's first goal of the season by finishing
Geraldine Guese's feed at 87:42 to settle the 5-1 final.
Vasquez compiled 11 of her 16 saves during the first half to turn away York's highest total since
Stephanie Gutierrez's 19 versus CCNY on Oct. 21, 2017.
York challenged Privateer goalie Lizzie Pomaro (1-0-0) with second-half shots by Guese (51') and Flores-Barajas (62') as Maritime finished with a 40-6 shot advantage.
The Cardinals (0-2-0) travel Wednesday (Sept. 4) to Brooklyn for a non-conference matchup with the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (1-0-0) at 7 p.m. from Aviator Field.
