JAMAICA, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball snapped a 19-match losing streak Friday afternoon to earn a convincing 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 26-24) season-opening road win against the Yeshiva University Maccabees (0-1) from Baruch College's ARC Arena.
First-year head coach
Francisco Casado and the Cardinals produced the program's first season-opening win to date since 2000 as the 25-19 opening set score marked York's first season-opening set triumph during that span. Following a service error by Yeshiva's Batya Schreier that broke an 8-all tie,
Alessandra Villota served four-straight points to give the Cardinals the jolt they needed during an opening set that saw York hit .450 with nine kills.
York totaled a match-high 10 kills on 24 swings to hit .255 in the final stanza to win the set by nine points (25-16). The Cardinals combined to hit .155 on the day to produce their highest attacking percentage since firing away at a rate of .179 on September 25, 2015 against Pratt Institute.
Kiara Gonzalez dished out a career-high 21 assists to direct the Cardinal offense.
Chrissy Hobson tallied a team-leading 13 points and nine kills to go along with three aces.
Dorianny Rojas served a career-high four aces while Villota added two.
Daylin Ramirez had six kills on 11 swings to hit .364 as
Shamonie Miller followed with five kills. Villota also scooped nine digs for the Cardinals on defense.
Yeshiva was led by Tehilla Teigman's match-high 11 kills and nine digs.
York registered 11 aces and finished with the advantage in hitting percentage (.155-.130) and assists (22-21).
The Cardinals (1-0) return to action next Wednesday (Sept. 4) when they travel to Purchase, New York to take on the Purchase College Panthers (0-0) in a non-conference showdown at 7 p.m. inside Purchase College Gymnasium.
