JAMAICA, NY --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's soccer opened the 2019 campaign Friday afternoon with a non-conference loss at home by the final count of 8-0 to the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (1-0-0) from Detective Keith L. Williams Park in Jamaica.
The Cardinals were the aggressor early on as
Geraldine Guese fired wide to put York in the shot column 6:31 in.
Gisselle Flores-Barajas tested Gryphon goalie Madison Mertsch (1-0-0) 2:37 later with York's first of two first-half shots on goal. The Cardinals continued to pressure with another shot from Flores-Barajas that landed on target at 10:43 followed by launching a corner kick 24 seconds later.
Sarah Lawrence answered in the 13th minute with Tiffany McBrayer's feed to Niki Dalrymple for the game-winning goal past
Chelsea Vasquez (0-1-0). Dalrymple doubled Sarah Lawrence's advantage in the 16th minute by finishing a run from Lily Halloway for the 2-0 lead. Following McBrayer's tally in the 26th minute, both teams played even for the rest of the half as the Gryphons held a 3-0 advantage at intermission.
The Gryphons put the match away in the second half as Dalyrmple scored twice with her fourth goal of the day to settle the 8-0 final in the 74th minute.
Vasquez finished with six saves in a complete game effort while Mertsch stopped three shots to secure the clean sheet. In the end, Sarah Lawrence held the advantage in shots (22-7), shots on goal (14-3) and corner kicks (3-2).
The Cardinals (0-1-0) travel Sunday (Sept. 1) to Throggs Neck, New York for a non-conference clash with the Maritime College Privateers at 12 p.m. from Reinhart Field.
