BELLEROSE, NY
--- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball not only celebrated their three-member 2019 senior class Monday afternoon, but also saw senior Nicole Ovelheira tie the program's all-time hit mark (90) in game two of the CUNYAC doubleheader against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (13-17, 7-3 CUNYAC) from Padavan-Preller Field.  Prior to opening pitch, seniors Argenis Morales (2019), Nicolasa Restituyo (2019) and Ovelheira (2016-19) were honored with the annual Senior Day Ceremony for their dedication to York College athletics.

Game 1 (5 Inn.): John Jay 10, York 0

John Jay jumped in front with a five-run opening frame on Cardinal starter Dorianny Rojas (L, 1-8: 4 IP, 6 H,10 R, 8 ER, 6 BB, 2 K).  Marissa Artz opened the scoring with a RBI single to plate home Julianne Graepel for the game-winning run. Three batters later, Inelza Salcedo (1-for-1, RBI, R) broke the game open with a three-run triple to make it a 4-0 game.

Rojas answered with a single to led off York's first inning before being thrown out attempting to steal second.

Ovelheira (2-for-2) produced her 24th-career multi-hit game with leadoff singles in the second and fifth innings off Graepel (W, 6-8: 5 IP. 3 H, 5 K).

John Jay added five runs (three earned) during a fourth inning that included a costly throwing error.

Game 2 (5 Inn.): John Jay 12, York 0

Ovelheira, who entered the day with 87 hits in 87 games played during her time as a Cardinal, singled off Brittany Williamson (W, 2-4: 5 IP, H, 8 K) in the second inning to register her 90th-career hit to tie York's all-time record set by Danielle Dunn (2011-2014).

Williamson then proceeded to retire the next 11 batters to secure John Jay's win.

After both teams tossed two scoreless innings, John Jay grabbed a 5-0 lead in the third off Cardinal starter Rosenery Chicaiza (L, 0-13: 5 IP, 13 H 12 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) and never looked back.  Tommi Mandell (3-for-4, 2 R, RBI) doubled in Briana Schmidt (2-for-3, R) for the game-winning run while Graepel (1-for-3, 3 R, BB) followed with a RBI single to double John Jay's advantage, 2-0.

John Jay tacked on four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to settle the 12-0 final.

The Cardinals (1-21, 1-11 CUNYAC) remain at home Thursday (May 2) to close out the 2019 campaign at 3 p.m. with a non-conference doubleheader against the Baruch College Bearcats (5-15, 4-8 CUNYAC) from Padavan-Preller Field.
