BELLEROSE, NYÂ --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com)Â York College softball senior
Nicole Ovelheira reached a pair of milestones Thursday afternoon at home in the team's season finale against the Baruch College Bearcats (8-16) from Padavan-Preller Field. Â
Ovelheira entered play tied with
Danielle Dunn (2011-14) in hits (90) and one RBI shy of tying her mark of 66. Â Ovelheira compiled three hits and a RBI in game one to finish as the program's all-time leader and joined Dunn as York's greatest run producers. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Game 1: Baruch 9, York 4
After Baruch opened the scoring ice with a pair of first-inning runs, Ovelheira(3-for-3, 2 R, RBI) answered with a record-breaking single that led to
Dorianny Rojas (1-for-3, 2 R, BB) scoring in the bottom of the frame to slice York's deficit in half. Â
Baruch produced all the scoring it needed with a four-run third inning to go up 6-1. Â
Ovelheira tripled and scored in the fourth on a
Mary Cuevas RBI single to make it a 6-2 game on Baruch starter Victoria Kisling (W, 7-15: 7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB, 15 K). Â
The Bearcats scored in the fifth and sixth innings before Ovelheira tripled home Rojas to set the hit record at 93 for her 25th-career multi-hit game. Â A fielding error by third baseman Joo Young Park scored Ovelheira for York's final run (9-4) in the sixth.
Rojas (L, 1-9: 7 IP, 8 H, 9 R, 7 ER, 8 BB, 9 K) fanned her last-three batters in the seventh to register a personal-best nine strikeouts during her 16-career complete game effort. Â
Game 2: Baruch 11, York 4
The Bearcats jumped ahead as their first-four batters reached in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead on Rojas (L, 1-10: 7 IP, 9 H, 11 R, 8 ER, 13 BB, 5 K) during a four-run frame. Â Â Â Â Â Â
Trailing 8-0 in the fourth, York responded with four runs on five hits and three errors to slice its deficit in half (8-4) on Kisling (W, 8-15: 7 IP, 6 H, 4 R, ER, BB, 9 K). Â Rojas singled and advanced home on a pair of errors for York's initial run.
Ashley Alcantara then slapped a RBI single to score Ovelheira, and two batters later,
Valentina Pozo's single drove in
Nicolasa Restituyo. Â Rosenery Cicaiza laced a timely two-out RBI single to plate home Alcantara for York's final run.
Rojas fanned the first-two batters in the top of the seventh to tie
Michelle Deleon's 2011 mark of 53 strikeouts for the single-season program record. Â Following the second out, Ovelheira was substituted out of the game and was greeted by teammates and cheers for both teams during her final game.
York (1-23) graduates a senior class of Ovelheira (2016-19), Restituyo (2019) and
Argenis Morales (2019). Â
