@yorkcardinals Softball threatens early against Lehman

The Cardinals travel Wednesday (Apr. 24) for a non-conference clash with Rosemont College

BELLEROSE, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College softball closed out a two-game CUNYAC set Tuesday afternoon against the Lehman College Lightning (9-16, 4-2 CUNYAC), falling 16-0 at home from Padavan-Preller Field.  The two teams had started the series on April 12, with Lehman taking the opener, 21-0, before rain prevented game two from being played.

The Lightning jumped ahead with a 10-run opening inning on Cardinal starter Dorianny Rojas (L, 0-6: 5 IP, 12 H, 16 R, 7 ER, 8 BB, 4 K).  Diamond Villegas (2-for-4, 4 RBI, 3 R, 2 2B, BB, SB) doubled down the left field line to score Stephany Cruz for the game-winning run.

With one out in the first inning, York garnered back-to-back walks by Isis Funez and Shamonie Miller before Lightning starter Tiffany Adames (W, 3-8: 5 IP, 0 H, 4 BB, 8 K) hit Ashley Alcantara with a pitch to load the bases.  Adames then retired the next two Cardinals to strand three runners on base.

York threatened again in the second inning as Adames' pitch hit Mary Cuevas, and then handed out a free pass to Valentina Pozo to place Cardinals at first and second base.  The Cardinals would again leave runners on base as Adames struck out two of the next three batters to escape out of the jam.

After allowing three runs in the second inning, Rojas settled down to ring up three batters on strikes during scoreless third and fourth frames.

Rojas went the distance to tie a career high with her fifth complete game outing of the season after the Lightning tacked on three unearned runs in the fifth to secure the series win.

Adames also stranded Cardinals at second base in the fourth and fifth innings.

The Cardinals (0-14, 0-8 CUNAYC) travel Wednesday (Apr. 24) to Rosemont, Pennsylvania to take on the Rosemont College Ravens (11-23) in a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader from Ravens Athletic Complex.
