York College men's volleyball started slow and were unable to recover Tuesday evening with a straight-set loss (25-13, 25-23, 25-14) to the visiting Purchase College Panthers (6-12) in non-conference action inside York College Gymnasium. The Cardinals (2-17) are now 3-3 against Purchase since 2009 and 2-2 when defending home court.
Akil Vaughn led York with 11.5 points and nailed down a match-high 10 kills while
Philton Paul directed the Cardinal offense with a career-high 15 assists.
Kevin Campbell added six kills and a team-leading seven digs. Vaughn, Campbell and
Mambe Koureissi each totaled 1.5 blocks. Anthony Nazario served York's lone ace and scooped up a personal-best six digs.
The Cardinals held a five-point lead (18-13) in the second stanza before Purchase rallied with a 12-5 run to close out the set. York enjoyed their best hitting set of the night with nine kills while attacking at a rate of .103 during game two. The Cardinals finished the match with 20 kills on 67 swings to hit .000. Purchase had 26 kills on 70 attempts to fire away at a .171 clip. Both teams drew even in blocks (5-5) and the Cardinals held a 27-26 advantage in digs as Purchase led the way in aces (15-1) and assists (24-16).
Andreo Otiniano captained Purchase with 18 assists while Jeremiah Huntt produced a match-leading 15 points on seven aces, seven kills and one block solo.
The Cardinals (0-5 CUNYAC) return to action Thursday (Mar. 21) with a critical CUNYAC road matchup against the Lehman College Lightning (3-15, 0-3 CUNYAC) at 7 p.m. inside The APEX. With just two CUNYAC games remaining on the schedule, York will look to climb the standings for a return trip to the CUNYAC Championship for the first time since 2016. York enters Thursday's showdown with a 10-4 record against the Lightning since 2012, including a 4-1 mark at Lehman during that stretch.
