www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's basketball gave away a hard fought non-conference decision at home Thursday night as the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers (5-4) outscored the Cardinals by 20 in the final quarter to pull away with a 59-50 win inside York College Gymnasium.
After an evenly played start to the game, York put together a 10-3 run to close out the final 4:14 to lead by four (12-8) after one quarter of play. Both teams traded baskets to start the second period before the Cardinals scored eight-unanswered points to push their lead to 12 (22-10) with 6:32 left. Cobleskill answered with a 10-3 spurt, and a jumper by
Mac-Dege Dessources at the 1:23 mark gave York a 28-20 advantage heading into the break.
Leading by five, York scored eight of the final 10 points in the third quarter to make it a 42-31 game.
Daniesha Newsome sank a pair of jumpers early in the final stanza to extend York's lead to a game-high 13 points (46-33) with 8:49 showing on the clock. After playing with the lead for a stretch of 29:40, York was outscored 28-8 in the fourth period as Cobleskill went on an 18-1 scoring spree to take a 51-47 lead with 3:16 left. The Cardinals got as close as three in crunch time before Cobleskill closed out the final 55 seconds with a 6-2 run to secure the win.
Dessources poured in a career-high 20 points (8-of-11) and pulled down 16 rebounds to register her 16th-career double-double. Newsome scored 12 points (5-of-7 FG) and
Ellma Hodzic followed with 11 points (2-of-4 3FG), three blocks and two steals.
Aminata Sagna nabbed a career-high five steals off the bench.
Nylasia Sutton scored 11 of her 19 points in the second half and dished out a game-high four assists to lead the Fighting Tigers to victory. Erica Cabrera went for 15 points and four steals.
In the end, York shot 32.2 percent from the field (19-of-59), 12.5 percent from 3-point range (2-of-16) and 43.5 percent from the free-throw line (10-of-23) as Cobleskill landed 27.9 percent from the floor (19-of-68), 26.9 percent from deep (7-of-26) and 58.3 percent from the charity stripe (14-of-24). Cobleskill outrebounded York by three (51-48) and scored 11 second-chance points off 16 offensive boards. York outplayed the Fighting Tigers in assists (14-12) and blocks (5-1) while Cobleskill held the advantage in steals (11-10).
The Cardinals (2-5) return to action Sunday (Dec. 15) on the road against the Yeshiva University Maccabees (3-8) at 7 p.m. inside Baruch College's ARC Arena in Manhattan.
