www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball opened a seven-game homestand Tuesday evening with a convincing 77-70 non-conference win over the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers (2-5) inside York College Gymnasium.
Both teams traded leads in the opening minutes and with Old Westbury ahead by four (14-10), the Cardinals scored nine-unanswered points to jump in front for good to take a 19-14 advantage at the 11:44 mark. With the game knotted at 21,
Donald Hartley, Jr. scored eight-straight points to cap a 13-0 run to push York's lead to a game-high 13-points (34-21) with 6:48 left. Old Westbury then closed out the final 6:25 with a 16-3 spurt to trail 40-37 at intermission.
York played with the lead for the final 32:05 and went up by as many as 11 points in the second half on a throwdown by
Akil Vaughn that made it a 71-60 game with 3:52 remaining. Old Westbury twice pulled within four in the final minutes, but were unable to overcome the deficit as York sealed the game by shooting 4-of-6 from the line in the final 53 seconds.
Hartley, Jr. tallied 19 points (5-of-7 FG, 4-of-6 3FG, 5-of-5 FT), four assists and three steals to lead York to victory.
Devine Chisholm followed with 13 points (4-of-4 FT), nine assists and five rebounds. Vaughn contributed 11 points (5-of-9 FG), 10 rebounds and one block to post his third-career double-double.
Jaye Bookhart added 11 points and five assists. Igniting the Cardinals off the bench were
DaQuan Workman and
Olawele Kila, who totaled eight points and seven rebounds, respectively.
Pedro Marquez scored 19 points to lead Old Westbury. Justin Alleyne-Washington went for 18 points while Pierre Perry finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds (eight offensive), four blocks and three steals.
In the end, York shot 47.5 percent from the field (29-of-61), 50 percent from 3-point territory (8-of-16) and a season-high 84.6 percent from the free-throw line (11-of-13) as the Cardinal defense limited Old Westbury to 38.7 percent from the floor (29-of-75), 20.8 percent from beyond the arc (5-of-24) and 53.8 percent from the charity stripe (7-of-13). The Cardinals won the boards battle, 42-40, while Old Westbury scored 17 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds. York also outplayed Old Westbury in assists (19-10) and fastbreak points (18-8).
The Cardinals (3-5) return to action Friday (Dec. 13) for day one of the York College Invitational against the SUNY Potsdam Bears (5-2) at 5:30 p.m. inside York College Gymnasium.
