LA PLUME, PA --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball registered five scorers in double-digits Saturday afternoon to erase an eight-point halftime deficit, but were unable to come away with the overtime result with a 102-99 setback on the road to the Keystone College Giants (2-3) from Gambal Athletic Center in La Plume, Pennsylvania.
After trailing by nine early in the second half, York went on an 18-6 scoring spree to take a three-point lead (54-51) with 14:02 left. During that stretch, the Cardinals knocked down all seven attempts from the field paced by
Devine Chisholm's eight points for York's first lead of the game. York played with the lead for a span of 10:35 and went up by as many as six points before Keystone regained an 82-81 advantage with 1:57 showing on the second-half clock. Following a 5-1 Giant run, York responded with six-straight points capped by
Mambe Koureissi's layup to give the Cardinals an 88-86 lead with five seconds left. Tone Cockrell would drop in a layup as time expired to give Keystone second life and forced York into its first overtime contest since December 2017.
In the extra frame, Keystone jumped ahead by seven prior to
DaQuan Workman's layup igniting an 8-2 Cardinal run to pull within one (100-99) with 27 seconds remaining. Cockrell converted a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left to settle the 102-99 final as
Donald Hartley, Jr.'s game-tying attempt from deep was blocked with time expiring to preserve Keystone's win.
York started slow and misfired on all seven attempts to open the game to trail 11-0 just 3:38 in. The Cardinals played catchup with a Keystone squad that drilled nine triples in the opening half to build a game-high 14-point lead (39-25) with 2:34 remaining in the period. York replied by scoring 11 of the game's next 16 points to close out the final 2:34 of first-half play to trail 44-36 at intermission.
Koureissi tallied five of his career-high 25 points (8-of-14 FG, 8-of-12 FT) in overtime and added 13 rebounds to register his first-career double-double. Hartley Jr. went for 19 points (5-of-6 FT), five rebounds, four assists and four steals while Chisholm and
Jaye Bookhart each tallied 17 points and five assists. Bookhart also nabbed three steals and Workman added 13 points in 31 minutes off the bench.
Cockrell led all scorers with a game-high 29 points (5-of-7 3FG) to go with seven assists. The Giants also saw four other double-digit scorers contribute to the win.
In the end, York shot 43.5 percent from the field (34-75), 40 percent from three-point territory (8-of-20) and 67.6 percent from the free-throw line (23-34) compared to Keystone hitting on 47.3 percent from the floor (35-74), 40.6 percent from long distance (13-32) and 67.9 percent (19-28) from the charity stripe. The Cardinals won the battle of the boards, 45-44, and tallied 19 second-chance points off 15 offensive rebounds. York also scored 16 points off 13 Giant miscues.
The Cardinals (2-3) continue their five-game road trip on December 3 with its CUNYAC opener against the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (0-3) from West Quad Center in Brooklyn.
