www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball posted the program's highest win total since 2015 (6-20) after closing out the 2019 campaign Saturday afternoon with a non-conference tri-match hosted by the Centenary University Cyclones in Hackettstown, New Jersey. The Cardinals, who finished the year with a record of 5-16 under first-year head coach
Francisco Casado, opened with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-15 setback to the host Cyclones (1-16) before falling in straight sets (25-6, 25-12, 25-11) against the defending CSAC champion Notre Dame of Maryland University Gators (23-3).
Centenary 3, York 0
The two teams traded leads in the first set with York's
Alexandra Taveras serving an ace to give the Cardinals a 16-13 advantage before Centenary answered with a 12-4 run to close out the stanza.
Alessandra Villota served three-straight points to give York a 7-5 lead in the second set prior to the Cyclones taking control of the match with a 20-12 spurt to secure the set win.
York opened with eight kills in the first set before tapering off to finish the match with 18 kills to hit .037. Centenary hit .178 in three sets and held the advantage in points (51-25), kills (33-18), aces (16-7), blocks (2-0), assists (31-18) and digs (38-33).
Villota produced a career-high 11 points on eight kills and three aces to spearhead York's offensive attack.
Chrissy Hobson followed with seven kills while Taveras' 17 assists moved the Cardinals on offense.
Kiara Gonzalez scooped nine digs as Hobson and Taveras each added six.
Emerald Richard posted 16 points on 10 kills, five aces and a block to lead Centenary to victory. Melissa Krueger and Amelia Rodriguez dished out 15 and 14 assists, respectively.
Notre Dame (MD) 3, York 0
Taveras served two aces and added a kill to pace York while Villota added two points (1 ace, 1 kill).
Arianna Villavicencio and
Ashley McKenzie each hit .500 with one kill. Villota produced a team-high five digs.
The Cardinals scored first in the opening stanza and kept it close in the beginning of each set, but were outplayed and finished the match hitting -.151 compared to Notre Dame attacking at a rate of .339. Notre Dame held the edge in points (54-8), kills (34-5), aces (17-3), blocks (3-0), assists (30-3) and digs (30-13).
Alyssa Kerns registered a match-high 10.5 points while Sara Few and Cara McLaughlin captain the Gator offense with 16 and 10 assists, respectively. Ivanella Figueroa served seven aces as Few and Hannah Amodia added four.
York graduates just one senior in
Dorianny Rojas (2018-19) and will look to carry the momentum forward from the 2019 season that saw the Cardinals post their highest win total since 2015.
