Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

@yorkcardinals Men’s Basketball registers trio of double-digit scorers in road opener at Maine Maritime

York College continues its five-game road trip next Friday (Nov. 22) at Clarks Summit University

CASTINE, Me.  --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's basketball outscored the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners (1-0) in the second half but were unable to overcome a five-point halftime deficit to drop their 2019-20 road opener, 77-74, Saturday afternoon from Smith Gymnasium in Castine, Maine.

Maine Maritime extended its lead to a game-high nine points (55-46) on a triple by DeMerrill  Levy with 11:28 showing on the second-half clock. Akil Vaughn converted a three-point play 17 seconds later to ignite a 14-0 Cardinal run that built York's lead to five (60-55) with 7:17 remaining.  The 14-unanswered points featured five different scorers contributing to the spurt with Donald Hartley, Jr. tallying five during that stretch. Both teams traded leads down the stretch and a Wesley Chery jumper followed by Jaye Bookhart's trey put the Cardinals up by three (72-69) with 2:24 left.  The Mariners would outscore York 8-2 in the final 1:56 with the Cardinals putting up just three attempts from the field as Nicholas Depatsy drilled the game-winning three-pointer with 50 seconds remaining for the 76-74 lead. York was unable to get an attempt off with four seconds left on the clock grabbing a defensive rebound following a missed free throw by Riley Jorgenson.

The opening period saw six lead changes and with Marine Maritime going up by as many as eight points (23-15) in the first half, the Cardinals went on a 12-1 scoring spree capped by Donovan White's three-pointer with five minutes left to grab a 27-24 edge.  York misfired on all five attempts in the final 2:33 as the Mariners scored eight-unanswered points to close out first-half play with a 34-29 advantage at intermission.

Devine Chisholm finished with 23 points (9-of-15 FG), seven assists, six rebounds and three assists to lead York.  Hartley, Jr. followed with 15 points, four assists and three steals while Vaughn added 11 points (5-of-6 FG) and seven rebounds.  Guillermo Hernandez contributed eight points (4-of-6 FG) and nine rebounds off the bench.

DePatsy drained 8-of-12 from deep to pour in a game-high 28 points to pace the Mariners.  Levy and Jorgenson scored 18 and 16, respectively.

After shooting 37.9 percent in the first half, York fired away at a clip of 62 percent in the final stanza to finish the game at 50 percent (29-of-58 FG) from the field.  Maine Maritime shot 47.5 percent from the floor (28-of-59) and connected on 13-of-30 from three-point territory, compared to 7-of-19 for York. Both teams struggled from the charity stripe with York sinking 64.3 percent (9-of-14) as the Mariners landed 53.3 percent (8-of-15).  In the end, York outrebounded the Mariners, 37-31, and scored seven second-chance points off three offensive boards. York swatted away three shots while Maine Maritime outplayed the Cardinals in assists (22-13), steals (7-6) and points off turnovers (15-12).

The Cardinals (1-2) continue their five-game road trip next Friday (Nov. 22) with a non-conference matchup against the Clarks Summit University Defenders (0-4) from Phelps Student Center in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania.
