@yorkcardinals Men’s Soccer snaps CUNYAC streak with 2-1 triumph at John Jay

York College returns home Saturday (Oct. 12) to take on Medgar Evers College in a CUNYAC showdown under the lights

NEW YORK --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's soccer rallied with two-unanswered goals Wednesday afternoon to snap a 41-match CUNYAC winless streak spanning back to 2014 with a convincing 2-1 triumph on the road against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (4-7-0, 2-2-0 CUNYAC) from Randall's Island Park Field 83.

Today's decision marked York's first conference win since a 4-2 victory at Hunter College on September 27, 2014.  During the 41-match stretch, York compiled four draws.

After Andrew DeCanio broke the scoring ice in the 25th minute for John Jay, York answered with the equalizer 40 seconds later by Hans Merilan on a feed from Steve Zang to send a tied game into intermission.

York jumped in front at 62:28 with Marvin Mondesir's first-career game-winning goal.  Mondesir sent a blast from 40 yards out past Bloodhound goalie Steven Towler (2-6-0) to continue his surge for the Cardinals with his sixth goal during a three-game scoring streak.

Cardinal netminder Jasper McLeod (2-10-0) turned away five shots to secure York's win while Towler made three saves in defeat for John Jay.

Mondesir finished with four of York's 14 shots as the Bloodhounds held the advantage in shots (18-14), shots on goal (6-5) and corner kicks (4-3).

"We came away with a hard fought win against a well-coached team topped off by Marvin Mondesir's incredible goal and a solid defensive effort," said York College head coach Al Meneses.  "We deserve better from this season and today's result is a positive step forward."

The Cardinals (2-10-0, 1-3-0 CUNYAC) return home Saturday (Oct. 12) evening for a 7 p.m. CUNYAC kickoff from Aviator Field in Brooklyn against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (1-8-0, 0-3-0).
