BROOKLYN --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College men's soccer returned home Saturday evening for a CUNYAC showdown with the Medgar Evers College Cougars (1-10-0, 0-4-0 CUNYAC), claiming a 2-1 triumph from Aviator Field for their second-straight win. The Cardinals have now won two-straight games for the first time since 2014.
The Cardinals tested Cougar goalie Stanley Saint Eloi (0-1-0) early, firing away four shots in the opening 5:53. York capitalized on a costly foul by Medgar Evers at 19:08 as
Kervin Mondesir connected on his first-career goal with a penalty kick past the outstretched arms of Saint Eloi for the 1-0 lead.
After facing three shots in the opening half, Cardinal goalie
Jasper McLeod (3-10-0) turned away three of five shots by Medgar Evers in the opening 20:37 of the second stanza. York doubled its advantage to make it a 2-0 game at 68:21 when
Kirk Gardner unloaded a strike off a feed from
Steve Zang from deep outside the box for his first-career game-winning goal. Medgar Evers sliced its deficit in half in the 79th minute as Oladayo Akinde put home a rebound past McLeod to settle the 2-1 final.
Both McLeod and Saint Eloi finished the night with five saves apiece. In the end, York outplayed Medgar Evers in shots (16-11), shots on goal (7-6) and corner kicks (7-1).
"This was certainly not one of our best games, but we got the result and will now shift our focus to get ready for Brooklyn College," said York head men's soccer coach Al Meneses. "We are in a good position to make a run for a return to the postseason."
The Cardinals (3-10-0, 2-3-0) return to the pitch next Saturday (Oct. 19) for a CUNYAC matchup on the road against the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (2-11-0, 2-3-0 CUNYAC) at 2:30 p.m. from Brooklyn College Field.
