www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's volleyball continued non-conference play Saturday with a trip to Mahwah, New Jersey to compete in the Ramapo College tri-match. The Cardinals (5-13) opened with a setback in straight sets (25-15, 25-11, 25-6) to the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (14-9) before falling in three sets to the host Roadrunners (12-4) inside Bradley Center.
Brooklyn 3, York 0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-6)
York jumped ahead in the opening set and both teams traded leads before a 4-0 Brooklyn spurt put the Bulldogs ahead for good. The Cardinals opened the match hitting .111 and improved to .118 before dropping in the third set to -.125 to finish at .065 for the match. Both teams drew even in blocks (0-0) while Brooklyn outplayed York in hitting percentage (.348 to .065), points (56-17), kills (38-15), aces (18-2), assists (38-14) and digs (48-42).
Leading the way for the Cardinals was
Chrissy Hobson, who produced five points on four kills and one ace.
Alexandra Taveras (4 kills, 6 assists) and
Shamonie Miller (3 kills, 1 ace) followed with four points apiece.
Alessandra Villota and
Kiara Gonzalez each scooped nine digs to lead the Cardinal defense.
Brooklyn's Ashley Fung tallied a match-high 15 points (12 kills, 3 aces) as Kate Meltsin's 36 assists captained the Bulldog offense.
Ramapo 3, York 0 (25-4, 25-8, 25-7)
The Cardinals grabbed their first lead of the match early in the third set before Ramapo ripped four-straight points to take control of the final stanza with a 6-3 advantage. York hit -.103 compared to Ramapo's .403.
Miller nailed down a team-leading three kills as Hobson contributed a pair to lead York. Taveras' six assists moved the offense while Villota registered eight digs followed by
Ashley McKenzie's six.
Desi Brower led the way for Ramapo with 12 kills as Kate Shirkey ignited the Roadrunner offense with 15 assists. Karina Almeda served eight aces and scooped 14 digs.
In the end, Ramapo held the advantage in points (54-7), kills (32-7), aces (21-0), blocks )1-0), assists (31-7) and digs (46-30).
The Cardinals (1-5 CUNYAC) return to the court Tuesday (Oct. 29) for their CUNYAC finale at 6 p.m. against the John Jay College Bloodhounds (5-14, 2-4 CUNYAC) from The Doghouse in Manhattan.
