BROOKLYN --- (
www.YORKATHLETICS.com) York College women's soccer jumped ahead with a two-goal lead Monday afternoon to post a 2-1 non-conference home win over the College of Saint Elizabeth Eagles (0-12-0) from Aviator Field in Brooklyn.
The Cardinals wasted no time testing Eagle goalie Hayley Baron (0-11-0) 67 seconds in with an attempt that landed wide by
Gisselle Flores-Barajas. York continued to pressure and put up 10 shots before an own goal in the 40th minute gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
With York holding a one-goal cushion at the end of 45 minutes, Flores-Barajas sank a free kick past the outstretched arms of Baron to double the advantage in the 60th minute for her first-career game-winning goal. Moments later, Alyssa Ortiz finished a throw-in from Orezia Logus to slice Saint Elizabeth's deficit in half at the 67:04 mark to settle the 2-1 final.
Cardinal goalie
Chelsea Vasquez (1-9-0) turned away two shots to secure her first-career win as Baron made eight stops in defeat for the Eagles.
York owed the advantage in shots (16-6) and shots on goal (10-4) while Saint Elizabeth controlled a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Cardinals (1-9-0, 0-3-0 CUNYAC) remain home Wednesday (Oct. 14) for a CUNYAC Senior Day showdown against the Medgar Evers College Cougars (0-10-0, 0-4-0 CUNYAC) at 2 p.m. from Aviator Field. Prior to kickoff,
Ina Okoro (2019) will be celebrated for her dedication to York College Athletics with the annual Senior Day Ceremony.
