BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Freshman Diana Velasquez (Bayshore, NY/Brentwood HS) scored her team-leading third goal of the season and junior Diamond Jackson (Ellenville, N.Y./Ellenville) made a career-high 10 saves but the York College women's soccer team suffered a 10-1 non-conference loss to St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn on Wednesday night at Aviator Field.
The Cardinals (0-5) hung tough and trailed 3-0 with 10 minutes left in the first half, before the Bears (3-2) rattled off three goals before the break with Deserae Sequeira accounting for four of St. Joseph's first-half goals.
The red and white came out aggressive in the second half. Five minutes in, York earned a direct kick in a dangerous position just outside the box on the left side. Velasquez fired the ensuing kick on goal and on the scramble for the rebound in front of the SJC net a Cardinal was dragged down and a penalty kick was awarded and the rookie calmly buried the it to cut the deficit to 6-1.
Despite the visitors adding four more tallies the remainder of the half and the Cardinals surrendering a season high in goals, York still managed to cut their goal differential from last year's encounter against the Bears by four goals.
Jackson would finish with a career-high 10 saves in defeat as she faced a barrage of 31 shots. Velasquez finished with three shots (all on goal) with fellow rookie Taylor Bellmon (Manhattan, N.Y./Williamsburg Charter HS) also registered a shot on goal.
York continues a five-game home stand at Aviator Field hosting Hollins University on Sunday, September 16 at noon.
