JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College Athletic Program held its 43rd Annual Athletic Awards Banquet, on Friday, May 11, handing out many awards to deserving student-athletes throughout the night.
The evening was culminated with the
Athlete of the Year Awards, which was given to
Nicole Ovelheira and
Dammon Trimmingham.
Ovelheira was a three-sport athlete (softball, track and field and swimming) and was named a CUNYAC All-Star in both softball and track and field. In softball, she led the team in nearly every major category and established a new school record for hits (29), batting average (.475) and on-base percentage (.515).
Trimmingham was a CUNYAC All-Star in both indoor and outdoor track and field. He dominated the weight throw during indoor season and the hammer throw during outdoor season, winning the gold in both events at CUNYAC Championships. He also ranked near the top in CUNY in several other field events.
The
Career Award, which is given to a graduating student-athlete that has played at least three years at York College and was deemed to have the most successful athletic career, was given to
Akeem George of the men's volleyball team and
Alana Johnson of the cross country/ track and field team.
George was a two-time CUNYAC All-Star and was the 2018 CUNYAC Sportsmanship Award Winner. He also finished his career fifth all-time in school history in blocks.
Johnson was a multiple-time CUNYAC All-Star in cross country and track and field. She also will receive a CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention award later this week.
The
2017-18 Rookie of the Year went to
Terrell Trumpet and
Kalice Hitchman of the men's and women's track and field team. Both athletes earned several medals throughout indoor and outdoor season and were each named CUNYAC All-Stars.
The
Scholar-Athlete of the Year also went to a track and field athlete:
Deloris Taylor. Taylor owns a 3.96 grade point average as a business major.
Finally, the newly minted
"I am a Cardinal" Award, which is given to the student-athlete who most embodies the team-first principles of sportsmanship, mutual respect, commitment and discipline, was awarded to
Hezekiah Corbin of the track and field and cheerleading squad.
Two major team awards were also given out.
Team of the Year went to men's swimming, who had their best record since 2009, while the
Team Academic Award (highest overall GPA) was earned by the Men's Tennis team for the second consecutive season.
Each team also handed out three awards. The complete list can be seen below:
