STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.—With four hits in a doubleheader at the College of Staten Island, York College junior
Nicole Ovelheira has set a new school record for hits in a season.
Ovelheira went a perfect 4-for-4 over two games against the Dolphins and now has 28 hits on the season, which topped the previous school record of 26. Shanay Patalano (2010),
Danielle Dunn (2013) and
Karen Werner (2014) were previously tied for the school record.
Ovelheira is having her best season for the Cardinals, hitting a CUNYAC-leading .500 (28-for-56) with a .714 slugging percentage and no strikeouts. She is likely to set several other school records for York once the season ends. She is on pace to set new York marks in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage and has a chance to eclipse the previous school records for doubles and RBIs as well.
There wasn't much else for York to cheer in the doubleheader, as York lost by scores of 15-1 and 14-0 respectively to the first-place Dolphins (16-10, 10-0 CUNYAC).
York (1-22, 0-10 CUNYAC) will close out the season next Sunday with a home doubleheader vs. the College of New Rochelle beginning at 12 p.m.
