Cardinals' Comeback Falls Short in Doubleheader Loss to Valley Forge

QUEENS, N.Y.—The York College softball team nearly overcame an early 5-0 deficit to the University of Valley Forge on Saturday, but ultimately lost by a score of 16-12 in the first game of a doubleheader. York went on to lose game two as well by a score of 12-2.

Valley Forge opened up game one with a 5-0 lead after a half inning of play despite not collecting a hit. York committed three errors.  Walks, hit batters and wild pitches helped contribute to the early deficit.

In the bottom of the inning, York cut into the lead with a two-run bottom of the first. Nathy Reyes brought home a run with an RBI double into the left field gap and then Nicole Ovelheira singled in Reyes in to make it 5-2.

Valley Forge plated two more runs in the second, before York responded with three more in the bottom of the third.  Reyes and Ovelheira were in the middle of the rally again.  Both players doubled to start the rally and then later York added two more runs on a wild pitch and a Valley Forge error.

Valley Forge had another big frame in the fourth, scoring three runs to take a seemingly comfortable 10-5 lead.  But York put up a five-spot in the inning to tie the game up at 10-10. Dorianny Rojas started it off with an RBI double and she came around to score on the play after the left fielder made an error.  Ovelheira followed with yet another hit and RBI and two more runners scored on errors to tie the score.

However, after Valley Forge scored a run in the fifth, they would score four more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.  A two-run triple by Carlee Conrad would be the big blow in the inning.

In the loss, Ovelheira was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Reyes was 3-for-5 as well with three runs and an RBI and Alyssa King went 2-for-5.

Game #2 lacked the drama of the first one. Valley Forge jumped out to an 11-0 lead after just three innings of play.  Shania Walker accounted for most of the offense for the Patriots. She blasted a three-run homer in the second inning. Danielle Handzel also had three RBIs.

Gabriela Alvarez led York, going 2-for-2, while Rojas was 2-for-3.

York is now 1-18. They will host Cairn University tomorrow at 1 p.m.
