Men’s Volleyball Stumbles As Team Drops Two CUNYAC Matchups

JAMAICA, N.Y. – The York College men's volleyball team fell in both their matches Saturday afternoon at home. In their first game, the Cardinals fell to City College, 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25,18). In their second game, the team was once again defeated, this time by Hunter College, 3-0 (25-10, 25-4, 25-6).

In the first of their CUNYAC matchups, the Cardinals took on City College (10-4). During the first set, York jumped out to an 8-5 lead after a kill by Wolf Metellus. The Cardinals would not see the lead again as City College would score nine out of the next ten points to grab a 14-9 lead. In the set, the Cardinals racked up six kills, but were done in by nine errors.

The second set wasn't nearly as close, as the Cardinals were down 13-5 early. The Beavers totaled 14 kills in the set, as they went on to grab a 25-18 win. The third set was close towards end, as a kill from Wolf Metellus put York down 21-18.  However, two errors by York and two kills by City College gave them the win in straight sets.

In the first matchup, Akil Vaughn led the Cardinals with six kills. Wolf Metellus and Akeem George each totaled three blocks apiece, which were a match-high. Kevin Campbell led the team with eight digs and Akil Vaughn totaled seven.

For City College, Carlos Maldonado Madrid racked up 17 kills against York, which was more than any other player would total on the day.

In the third matchup of the day, York took on Hunter College. Hunter was in a groove on Saturday, as they defeated City College in the second match on the afternoon before defeating the Cardinals in straight sets. The Cardinals were dispatched quickly as they mustered only 20 points combined in the three sets.

The Cardinals totaled more errors (24) than kills (17) and Hunter played nearly perfect as they totaled only one error in each set. In this tough match, Frederis Tapia led the team with four kills and Wolf Metellus contributed three.

The service game was key for Hunter as they hit 13 aces, led by Alec Helford and Daniel Kim who each totaled four.

York's (3-13) next contest will be on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., as they take on Bard College (1-14) who beat City College their last time out. The Cardinals will be on their home floor as they look to grab a much-needed bounce back victory.
