Women’s Basketball Wins in Convincing Fashion Over John Jay

JAMAICA, N.Y.—Paced by a triple-double from Karen Bellamy, the York College women's basketball team earned a convincing, 78-40, victory over John Jay College on Thursday afternoon.

Bellamy finished with a line of 13 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists. She also added six steals on defense. Allison Ahmed posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.  Victoria Salas scored a career-high 14 points and Sheahna Roscher finished with 12 points and four assists.

The Cardinals never trailed after an initial John Jay basket.  Victoria Salas netted five points in the early part of the game to put the Cardinals up 9-4. York would hold the lead until John Jay rallied in the second quarter to score six straight and tie the game at 18-18.  But York would quickly quell the run and respond with 16 unanswered points to take a 34-18 lead with two minutes left in the half.  Allison Ahmed was instrumental during the run, including making a buzzer beater at the end of the half. York took a 38-23 lead going into the locker room.

In the second half, the Cardinals continued to pour it on, outscoring the Bloodhounds, 40-17. York held John Jay scoreless for the final five minutes of the third quarter and scored the final nine points to push the lead up to 60-32. In the fourth quarter, they grabbed their largest lead of the game when Sheahna Roscher drained a three-pointer to put her team up by 40. York would win by 38 points.

York played a strong defensive game, holding John Jay to 25 percent shooting and forcing 29 turnovers. The Cardinals also shot a solid 41 percent from the field and made 77.8 percent of their free throws.

With the win, York is 7-16, 5-10 CUNYAC and is still in the playoff hunt as they sit a 1/2 game behind Baruch College for the final CUNYAC playoff spot.  The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday with a road contest at the College of New Rochelle.
