NEW YORK, N.Y.—The York College women's basketball team saw its CUNY Athletic Conference playoffs hopes take a big hit with a 77-58 loss to the City College of New York on the road Tuesday night.
The loss drops York's record to 6-16 overall and 4-10 in the CUNYAC. The Cardinals sit a half game behind Baruch College (4-9 CUNYAC) for the last playoff spot with two conference games remaining. Baruch holds the tiebreaker over York and has two games against the bottom two teams in the league.
The Cardinals lost despite a 31-point, five-steal effort from
Karen Bellamy.
Victoria Salas also chipped in 11 points.
CCNY (14-8, 8-6 CUNYAC) was led by Erica Redwood, who dropped 30 points on 12-of-18 shooting. Ashley Brooks had 14 points and 17 rebounds.
CCNY shot 46 percent from the field compared to 31 percent for York. They also out-rebounded the Cardinals, 53-39.
York struggled on offense in the first half of play, scoring just 18 points on 6-of-29 shooting. CCNY led by six after the first quarter. In the second quarter, CCNY held York scoreless for more than five minutes and scored 11 unanswered points to up by 17. They led 33-18 at halftime. Although the Cardinals played better in the second half, the first-half drought would be too much to overcome.
The Cardinals will be home on Thursday, February 8 to take on CCNY at 5:30 p.m.
