Cardinals Suffer Loss to Wilkes University in Straight Sets

JAMAICA, N.Y.- The York College men's volleyball team suffered a tough loss tonight against Wilkes University, 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-21).  York made a rally in the third set but it was ultimately not enough to propel them to victory at home.

The Cardinals struggled in the first two sets, losing by double digits in each. The third set however, was a different story for the Cardinals as they fought hard and jumped out to an 11-5 lead. York gained this lead thanks in part to four straight errors by the Colonels.

The Colonels immediately made a run of their own as Daniel Sales served up four straight aces followed by a kill from Brian Vu, which tied things up. The set was evenly played until Wilkes University went on a run, which saw them score five times and gain a 23-19 lead. The Cardinals were unable to fight back and ultimately lost the set 25-21.

Akil Vaughn led the way for the Cardinals as he totaled six kills and three digs. Frederis Tapia had four kills and one block, while Juan Rodriguez recorded one kill and six digs.

For the Colonels, Dylan Smith had a game-high 11 kills, while his teammate Brian Schumacher also put up double-digit kills, recording 10.

The service game sealed the fate of the Cardinals on this night. Wilkes University served up 15 aces, while the Cardinals only mustered two. Daniel Sales was the star in the service game for the Colonels as he finished with a game-high six aces.

York (1-10) won't have much time to dwell on this game as they will head over to Yeshiva University for a road game on Sunday, February 25th at 1:00 p.m.
