JAMAICA, N.Y. — The York College (N.Y.) women's basketball team (1-6, 1-2 CUNYAC) downed Lehman College, 75-47, in a one-sided CUNYAC victory on Friday night at the York College Gym.
The Cardinals earned their first win of the season behind a season-high 20 points from Sheahna Roscher (Bronx, N.Y./Fannie Lou Hamer) and an 11-block, 21-rebound double-double (nine points) from freshman sensation Mac-Dege Dessources (Brooklyn, N.Y./Opportunity Charter).
Entering tonight's game Dessources sat tied for second in Division III with 16.3 rebounds per game and with her double-double tonight she became tied for fourth in DIII with six on the season (seven games played).
After a close start to the first quarter, York ended the period on a 12-4 run, featuring two triples from Roscher, as they held a 17-10 advantage after one. The Cardinals established a double-digit lead early in the second and they ended the period just like the first, finishing on a 9-0 run to secured a 40-23 halftime lead.
York didn't look back, winning the second half 35-24 as they would go on for a convincing 28-point triumph in a league battle at home. Kristina Sierra (Bronx, N.Y./Democracy Prep) dropped 11 points in the second half to lead the Cardinals, whose defense held the Lightning to a 22.9% mark from the field over the final two quarters.
Ellma Hodzic (Queens, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) added 10 points, six assists and three steals. Sierra finished with 14 on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting night from three while Keyla Cabrera (Queens, N.Y./Bayside) posted a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double in the win.
