Hunter Narrowly Edges Men’s Basketball in CUNYAC Battle

NEW YORK — In their second conference matchup of the season, the York College (N.Y.) men's basketball team (3-5, 0-2) fell to Hunter College (3-4, 1-1), 68-64, at the Sportsplex on Tuesday night. The Cardinals losing streak reached five despite senior Darin Dove's (Bronx, N.Y./Samuel Gompers) team-high 18 points.

York held a four point lead after a Stephan Cadet (Jamaica, N.Y./Hampton) layup at the 15:49 mark in the first. The Hawks immediately reeled off nine unanswered points to take a 13-8 lead after a Gio Gabbidon fastbreak finish for two of his game-high 19 points.

The Cardinals battled back and it was a neck-and-neck affair that saw Hunter's lead cut to two after a pair of free-throws from Dove with two minutes to go in the first half. However, Melvin Collins buried a last-second triple to give the hosts a four-point advantage (30-26) at the break.

Back-to-back long-balls for the Hawks early in the second gave them the first double-digit lead of the night, 38-28 (18:11). York then mounted an 11-0 run that brought them right back in the game trailing by one (40-39). The Cardinals were right on Hunter's heels for most of the period, but Cadet completed a three-point play to tie things at 59 (2:55).

Dove buried a three for a two-point York lead soon after, but the Hawks ended with momentum and held on for a 68-64 victory.

Dove had four rebounds and three assists along with his 18, while Cadet and Maliqe John (Brooklyn, N.Y./East Stroudsburg North) each had 10 points to round out those in double-figures.

Next up for the Cardinals is a home CUNYAC doubleheader against Lehman College on Friday (Dec. 7) starting at 7:30 p.m
