NEW YORK — Standout freshman Mac-Dege Dessources (Brooklyn, N.Y./Opportunity Charter) put up an impressive 15-point, 24-rebound double-double, but the York College (N.Y.) women's basketball team (0-6, 0-2) dropped a CUNYAC bout with Hunter College (3-4, 2-0), 87-55, at the Sportsplex on Tuesday night.
Dessources buried a pair at the line to cut Hunter's lead to six (14-8) at 4:39 in the first quarter, but the Hawks concluded the frame on an 8-2 run to maintain a 22-10 lead after one. An Edina Music layup three minutes into the second extended the hosts lead to 14 (30-16) as they began to gain control of the game.
The Cardinals battled all the way back within single digits late in the first half, with Dessources finishing a layup off of a pass from Kristina Sierra (Bronx, N.Y./Democracy Prep Charter) to make it 37-29 at 1:34. York kept the deficit in single digits (41-33) at intermission as they held Hunter to 32% shooting over the first two quarters.
York couldn't sustain the comeback as they went on to trail by 11 entering the fourth. Then, in the final stanza, Hunter dominated outscoring the Cardinals 26-5 to solidify a one-sided league victory.
Dessources was active on defense as well swatting three shots to compliment her double-double. Ellma Hodzic (Queens, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan) tallied nine points, eight rebounds, and four assists while Sierra added 12 points off the bench.
Next up for the Cardinals is a CUNYAC contest at home on Friday (Dec. 7) at 5:30 pm in the first part of a basketball doubleheader.
