CLINTON, N.Y. — On day two of the Hamilton Invitational Classic, the York College (N.Y.) men's basketball team (3-2) fell to host Hamilton College (2-0), 125-65, on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals have now lost two straight after opening the season on a three-game win streak.
Rookie guard Devine Chisholm (Brooklyn, N.Y./John Dewey) dropped a career-high 17 points off the bench in the loss.
Hamilton stomped their foot down right away, opening the first half with 14 unanswered points finished off by a trey-ball from Michael Grassey (17:09). The hosts continued their hot start, outscoring York 12-2 over a two minute span to run away with a 31-7 lead. The Continentals went on to hold a 63-37 lead behind 25 points from Kena Gilmour at halftime.
The deficit was too large for York to overcome as Hamilton used 52.5% field goal shooting and a 44.4% mark from deep to outscore the Cardinals 62-28 in the second half. Five Continentals reached double-figures led by 28 from Gilmour and 22 from Grassey as they improved to 2-0 on the year.
For York, Chisholm dished out two assists and swiped a steal to compliment his 17, while Darin Dove (Bronx, N.Y./Samuel Gompers) was the only other Cardinal in double-figures with 12. Akil Vaughn (Georgetown, Guyana/St. Roses) pulled down a team-high eight boards as well as four points and a block. Freshman Devante McGhee (Brooklyn, N.Y./Seward) added seven points, four rebounds, and two assists in 20 minutes.
Next up for the Cardinals is their CUNYAC opener on the road at Brooklyn College next Friday (Nov. 30) beginning at 7:15 p.m.
