JAMAICA, N.Y. — Seniors Taishaun Forehand-Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y./Thomas Jefferson) and Darin Dove (Bronx, N.Y./Samuel Gompers) combined for 57 points as the York College (N.Y.) men's basketball team (2-0) downed Cairn University (0-2) 88-87 on Tuesday night at the York College Gym. Jenkins dropped a game-high 29, including the game-winning free-throw, and Dove was right behind him with 28 giving the Cardinals back-to-back victories.
A Cairn three-ball at 13:49 in the first kept the game close early at 21-20, but a 10-1 York run featuring five points from Dove gave them a commanding 31-21 lead. Jenkins buried a triple of his own with four minutes to go in the period, stretching the hosts' advantage to 13 (40-27). Jenkins converted a pair of freebies four seconds before intermission as the Cardinals maintained a 48-36 halftime lead.
York's lead reached 17 (64-49) after some more Jenkins free-throws, but the Highlanders ended up clawing back and eventually an Eric Jacobs long-ball gave them an 83-81 advantage with three minutes to play. The teams battled to the end, but Jenkins scored the final eight points for the Cardinals as well as drawing a foul with less than a second left on the clock to force a game-deciding trip to the line.
Jenkins added seven assists and three rebounds to his game and season-high 29 points while Dove notched 28 on masterful 8-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc. Maliqe John (Brooklyn, N.Y./East Stroudsburg North) and Stephan Cadet (Jamaica, N.Y./Hampton) chipped in six points apiece and Devine Chisholm (Brooklyn, N.Y./John Dewey) added seven points, seven rebounds, and four steals off the bench.
Up next for the Cardinals is their first road test of the season heading to St. Joseph's College (Long Island) on Thursday (Nov. 15) with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
