Women’s Volleyball Battles in Hard-Fought Loss to Yeshiva

JAMAICA, N.Y. — The York College women's volleyball team (0-11) hosted Yeshiva University (0-3) on Thursday night and won their first set of the 2018 season despite losing the match 3-1.

Set number one was back-and-forth at the beginning, but Yeshiva built a six-point lead after two kills from Tehilla Teigman and a Batya Schreier ace. Teigman slammed an ace of her own to make it 20-14 in favor of the visitors, but the Cardinals bounced right back with an 11-1 run to win the set featuring three Dorianny Rojas aces.

The second set was also close from the outset as an ace from Chanelle Quezada gave York a 10-9 advantage. The teams traded points until a 3-0 spurt gave the Macs an 18-15 lead. York went on to take regain control at 23-22 after back-to-back Quezada aces, but three unanswered scores from Yeshiva tied the match up at 1-1.

Yeshiva raced out to an 18-10 advantage in the third due to many errors from the hosts. The Cardinals never led after their third point and gave up the third set 25-15. The fourth set was just as close as the first two with a Chayana Jimenez kill tying the score at 10. A service ace from Argenis Morales gave York a 15-12 lead, but an 11-3 run from the visitors gave them control at 23-18. The Cardinals kept it close but fell 25-21 and dropped the match 3-1.

Jimenez notched a near double-double with 10 kills and nine digs while Kiara Gonzales had nine assists and Shamonie Miller added six kills, seven assists, and ten digs. Rojas finished with five aces and Morales chipped in five kills and four aces of her own.

Next up for the Cardinals is a tri-match at the York College Gym hosting Medgar Evers and William Paterson beginning at 1 p.m.
