BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The York College men's soccer team ended their 2018 campaign falling 7-0 to New Jersey City University in a non-conference game on Wednesday evening at Aviator Field.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals (1-14-1, 0-7-1) showed a 12-goal improvement offensively over last season and managed to secure a point in CUNYAC play with a tie after dropping all eight league games in 2017.
The Gothic Knights (6-8) snapped a six-game skid with the victory opening the scoring in the 23rd minute with a header off a corner set piece.
Johan Bermeo (Jamaica, NY/Queens Vocational HS) stopped a penalty kick in the 34th minute but Luis Lang cleaned up the rebound and scored again four minutes later as NJCU led 3-0 at the intermission.
York found their way into the offensive end more in the second stanza and fired off five shots but couldn't place one into the cage. The Cardinals had a great opportunity to spoil the shutout in the final seconds gaining a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box, but NJCU backup keeper Danny Montehermoso matched Bermeo's effort in the first stopping the PK, and stonewalled
Tyrese Jackson (Brooklyn, NY/BCAM HS) on the doorstep just as time expired.
The visitors maintained a 33-5 shot advantage in the contest and Bermeo made seven saves in goal to close out the season.
