Men’s Basketball Hands Lehman its First CUNYAC Loss

JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team knocked off Lehman College, 81-76, to give the Lightning its first CUNY Athletic Conference loss of the season.

York's Edwin Sainvil led the way with a season-high 27 points on 50 percent shooting. Ryan Smart got another double-double, recording 16 points and 18 boards to go along with two blocks, while Jean Joseph scored 18 points and had six boards.

Lehman (8-4, 4-1 CUNYAC) got 22 points and six boards from Luis Hernandez, while Andrew Utate scored 19 points.

The game was close throughout, but Lehman held the lead for most of the first half. After trailing by eight points with three minutes left in the half, York finished strong, rallying to tie the game thanks to a Jean Joseph buzzer-beater for three points, which made it 41-41.

The second half saw Lehman pull ahead again, but York would go on a 12-0 run midway through the half to go up 64-53 with just over 10 minutes to play. Sainvil and Smart were big for York, accounting for all 12 points in the run.

From there, the Cardinals never trailed, but Lehman would make it interesting, closing the deficit to one point following a Utate three-pointer with 1:26 to go.

York would not be denied, though. Joseph would follow with a lay-up and then York got a defensive stop.  Sainvil was fouled on the next possession and made both free throws to seal the win.

With the victory, York is now 4-7, 2-2 CUNYAC. They will visit Hunter College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
