Men’s Basketball Comeback Falls Short in Loss to CCNY

JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team nearly overcame a nine-point deficit in the final minute of play, but a technical foul in the final seconds thwarted the comeback attempt, as the Cardinals fell 86-77 to CCNY Saturday afternoon.

Trailing by nine points with 54 seconds to go, York scored eight unanswered points, thanks to a three-pointer from Jean Joseph and a three-point play from Edwin Sainvil.  Four missed CCNY free throws also helped York's cause.

However, after CCNY made two free throws to go back up by three, York called a timeout when they did not have any remaining. Instead of having the final possession of the game with a chance to tie, the Cardinals were called for a technical foul, which gave CCNY two more free throws. That would seal the win for CCNY.

York had trouble finding its rhythm all game, shooting 35 percent from the field on the day. However, they still held a seven-point lead with just 11 minutes to go in the game.  The Cardinals would go cold though, and CCNY would go on a 14-5 run to move ahead by eights points.

In the loss, York got 20 points and five boards from Darin Dove, while Sainvil finished with 17 points.  Joseph tallied 15 points and eight boards.

CCNY was led by Salvatore Palazzolo and James White, who each had 22 points.

With the loss, York drops to 5-9, 3-4 CUNYAC.  CCNY is 1-14, 1-7 CUNYAC.
