JAMAICA, NY- The York College women's volleyball team got their first won of the season on Saturday, defeating Medgar Evers College, 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 26-24, 25-23). Earlier in the day, they fell to Sarah Lawrence College, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-9).
Four Cardinals set new career-highs in the match vs. Medgar Evers.
Argenis Morales had a career-high in kills in the match with 15, while
Allison Li also posted a career high with 19 assists to go along with five aces and ten digs.
Kassandra Diaz topped her career high in digs with 18, while
Chayana Jimenez finished with a career-high six kills and 11 digs. As a team, the Cardinals had 12 aces in the win.
The Cougars and Cardinals split the first two matches. The third set came down to the wire, as the teams traded points until the end. A kill by
Argenis Morales and an ace by
Maria Rodriguez allowed the Cardinals to win the set, 26-24.
The Cougars looked as though they were going to bounce back and take the fourth set, but a late rally by York helped put the Cardinals over the top.
York dropped the first match to Sarah Lawrence 3-0. Melanie Coleman led the way for the Gryphons with 15 kills, who was set up for most of the game by Lauren Kilroy who chipped in 20 assists.
York now holds a 1-12 record but will look to carry this momentum into their next match when they play Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday, October 3
rd at the York College Gymnasium.
