BELLEROSE, N.Y.—The York College softball team could not hold on to a 4-0 lead and fell to the College at Old Westbury, 12-9, in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday. Old Westbury also won the first game by a convincing margin of 18-0.
GAME TWO RECAP
In the bottom of the third, York put two runners on after a leadoff single by
Kenihak Tavarez and a walk from
Chyla Guevara. York then scored two runs after consecutive errors by the Old Westbury second baseman. Then,
Dorianny Rojas singled home a run, and on the play, a throwing error by the catcher allowed a second run to score, giving York a 4-0 lead.
Old Westbury cut the deficit in half, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth after a two-out throwing error allowed two runs to score.
However, York responded with a three-run frame to take what seemed to be a comfortable 7-2 lead. A couple more Old Westbury errors allowed two more runs to score and then
Nicole Ovelheira singled home another to give York a five-run lead.
But York could not hold down the Panthers the rest of the game. In the top of the fifth, the Panthers loaded the bases with one out. A bases loaded walk and then two straight wild pitches brought home all three base runners. Another run followed and the lead was cut to 7-6.
Old Westbury followed with three runs in the sixth to take a 9-7 lead. York rallied in the bottom half of the inning, getting RBI doubles from Ovelheira and
Dorianny Rojas to tie the game at 9-9.
Unfortunately, Old Westbury once again scored three runs, taking advantage of a crucial error to start the inning. The Panthers then shut down York in the bottom of the seventh to get the win.
Ovelheira finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Guevara scored three runs. Rojas was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
