BELLEROSE, N.Y.—The York College softball team took leads into the final inning of both games of its doubleheader vs. Brooklyn, but ended up losing each time by scores of 11-8 and 12-11 respectively.
Game One Recap
With the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth, York got a pair of two-out, RBI singles from
Conetia Anderson and
Kenihak Tavarez to take a 5-3 lead. The Cardinals maintained the lead into the final inning, but Brooklyn rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead.
This forced York to make a comeback of its own, plating two runs—one on an error and another on a single from Tavarez to tie the game at 7-7 and sending the game into extra innings. However, Brooklyn would tack on four more runs in the top of the eighth to get the win.
In the loss, Tavarez finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Anderson was 4-for-5 with two RBIs.
Nicole Ovelheira was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.
Game Two Recap
York found itself in a 7-1 hole heading into the bottom of the fourth, but rallied to put eight runs in the bottom of half of the inning to go ahead 9-7.
Jarline Gonzalez had a two-run double and
Nathy Reyes triple home a run to highlight the big inning.
The Cardinals held an 11-10 lead going into the final inning, but poor fielding allowed Brooklyn to put up two runs in the frame to move ahead 12-11. York then went down quietly in the bottom of the inning.
Chyla Guevara went 4-for-5 with three runs in the loss, while
Dorianny Rojas, Alvarez and Gonzalez each had two hits.
The two tough losses leaves York (0-14, 0-8 CUNYAC) still seeking its first win of the season. Brooklyn is 4-16, 2-6 CUNYAC. The Cardinals host John Jay College on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
