Brooklyn Rallies in Final Inning Twice to Top York Softball

BELLEROSE, N.Y.—The York College softball team took leads into the final inning of both games of its doubleheader vs. Brooklyn, but ended up losing each time by scores of 11-8 and 12-11 respectively.

Game One Recap

With the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth, York got a pair of two-out, RBI singles from Conetia Anderson and Kenihak Tavarez to take a 5-3 lead.  The Cardinals maintained the lead into the final inning, but Brooklyn rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead.

This forced York to make a comeback of its own, plating two runs—one on an error and another on a single from Tavarez to tie the game at 7-7 and sending the game into extra innings.  However, Brooklyn would tack on four more runs in the top of the eighth to get the win.

In the loss, Tavarez finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Anderson was 4-for-5 with two RBIs.  Nicole Ovelheira was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.

Game Two Recap

York found itself in a 7-1 hole heading into the bottom of the fourth, but rallied to put eight runs in the bottom of half of the inning to go ahead 9-7.  Jarline Gonzalez had a two-run double and Nathy Reyes triple home a run to highlight the big inning.

The Cardinals held an 11-10 lead going into the final inning, but poor fielding allowed Brooklyn to put up two runs in the frame to move ahead 12-11.  York then went down quietly in the bottom of the inning.

Chyla Guevara went 4-for-5 with three runs in the loss, while Dorianny Rojas,  Alvarez and Gonzalez each had two hits.

The two tough losses leaves York (0-14, 0-8 CUNYAC) still seeking its first win of the season. Brooklyn is 4-16, 2-6 CUNYAC.  The Cardinals host John Jay College on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
