BROOKLYN, NY- The York women's basketball team traveled to CUNYAC opponent Medgar Evers College on Friday night and came away with their second win of the season, defeating the Cougars, 73-49.
At halftime, York was able to gain a 29-22 lead. The Cardinals got to the line early and often, attempting 16 total free throws in the first half. Through the first two quarters of play, the team shot 44% from the field, including 33% from deep.
The lead for the Cardinals remained in single digits until the fourth quarter where York pulled away. Aided by a 19-6 run, York outscored the Cougars 32-15 in the final quarter of play.
However, the story of the game was the defense for the Cardinals, as they were able to pester the Cougars for most of the game. Medgar Evers only shot 28% from the field, while turning the ball over 27 times. York capitalized on these opportunities, scoring 20 points off turnovers. The Cardinals totaled 14 steals, including seven by
NyKeisha Paul.
Along with the seven steals, Paul had an impressive game, including a game-high 19 points, while also chipping in nine rebounds and seven assists.
Giovana Rosado added 14 points, while making three three-pointers, and
Karen Bellamy had 12 points on 66 percent shooting.
The Cardinals will look to make it two in a row in their next road game against New Jersey City University. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, December 13th at 6:00 pm.
