BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The York College men's basketball team had six players score in double figures en route to defeating Medgar Evers College on the road Friday night by a score of 80-64.
Ryan Smart had a team-high 17 points to go along with 14 rebounds, four blocks and three assists to lead the Cardinal attack.
Edwin Sainvil chipped in 12 points and a season-high seven assists, while
Jamel Harris,
Taishaun Forehand-Jenkins and
Reggie Outlaw each chipped in 12 points.
Jonathan Jones added 10 points.
Medgar Evers got a game-high 24 points from Maurice Swaby II and 13 points from Joancarlo Bonilla.
Although York led for most of the game, the Cardinals found themselves trailing with ten minutes remaining after being outscored 15-5 over a five-minute span, which gave the Cougars a 50-49 lead. York picked up the pace and scored on its next five possessions to take a 59-53 lead with 9:37 to go. A Smart dunk helped cap off the run.
From there, York was able to push its lead up to double-digits, leading by as many as 13 and not allowing Medgar to get any closer than eight points the rest of the way. A three-pointer by Forehand-Jenkins followed by a
Jonathan Jones steal and dunk with under three minutes to play would seal the Cougars' fate.
With the win, York is now 2-5, 1-1 CUNYAC, while Medgar Evers is 2-5, 0-2 CUNYAC. The Cardinals are idle until next Friday when they take on Penn College at the Lycoming Holiday Tournament.
