JAMAICA, N.Y.—The York College men's basketball team used a total team effort, with four players scoring in double figures, to defeat conference-rival Medgar Evers College, 68-57 at home Friday night.
York's
Edwin Sainvil led the way with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting and four steals.
Ryan St. John scored 13 points, while
Ryan Smart recorded another double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds).
Jean Joseph, who made his season debut tonight, made a big contribution, scoring 10 points and handing out three assists off the bench.
The Cardinals struggled mightily from the free throw line in the first half, making just 5-of-20 shots. This allowed the Cougars to take a 19-12 lead after a three-pointer by Joancarlo Bonilla with 10:12 to go in the half.
However, after rallying to tie the score, York closed the half on a big run, scoring eight unanswered to take a 32-23 lead just before halftime. Josh Lopez helped ignite the run with a pair of buckets.
The Cougars would keep it close for most of the second half, but York would close strong. A jumper by
Ryan Smart with 2:08 to play put York up by eight, and moments later, a three-point play by Joseph helped seal the victory.
The win puts York at 2-15, 2-8 CUNYAC, while Medgar Evers drops to 3-12, 2-7 CUNYAC. York will have a quick turnaround, as they host Ramapo College in a non-conference game on Monday at 7 p.m.
