JAMAICA, N.Y. –The York College men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought game to John Jay College, 70-67, after missing a potential game-winning three pointer in the final seconds of play.
The two teams went back and forth all evening. The Cardinals led by as much as ten, but the game was close for most of the contest. In the waning moments of the game, the Cardinals trailed by two points and were on the fast break after a missed John Jay free throw.
Edwin Sainvil found
Ryan St. John for an open three-pointer in the corner, but the shot was just off the mark.
York held a five-point lead at halftime and held an advantage for most of the second half. However, John Jay moved ahead with nine minutes to go and maintained a narrow lead for the rest of the game.
Trailing by five with under a minute to play, a pair of Ediwn Sainvil free throws and then a
Ryan Smart jumper cut the deficit down to just one point. York fouled on the next possession and John Jay made one of two free throws to go up by two. The Cardinals were then fouled on their next possession, but Sainvil missed a potential game-tying free throw. John Jay was fouled again. Wyatt Harkins hit the first throw and missed the second, before York missed the final shot.
Sainvil led York with 20 points, while
Ryan St. John and
Josh Perez each scored nine. MiKing Richardson scored 21 points to lead John Jay, while Essien Epps had 20.
John Jay is now 4-10, 3-5 CUNYAC, while York is 1-14, 1-7 CUNYAC. The Cardinals visit Baruch College on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
