JAMAICA, N.Y— The York College women's volleyball team earned its first win of the 2016 season with a win over Yeshiva University in its home opener Thursday night, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-20).
Shauncia McClendon led York (1-3) with a solid all-around effort, recording five kills and six aces.
Tiandra Jones finished with a match-high seven kills and
Wilnoska Perez led all players with nine digs. Gavriela Colton had six digs to lead Yeshiva (0-3).
In the opening set, York held a lead for majority of play and looked poised to pull away after a Yeshiva attack error gave York a 22-19 advantage. However, the Maccabees responded with four straight points to go up by one, prompting a York timeout. After regrouping on the sidelines, York got a kill from
Argenis Contreras and then forced two attack errors to clinch the first set.
In the second set, Yeshiva held an early, 12-10 advantage, until the Cardinals got four straight points, which was capped by a
Cheisan Pulinario ace. After Yeshiva earned the next point, the Cardinals rattled off four straight more and pulled away to go up 2-0.
In the third set, York was cruising along and held what seemed to be a comfortable 21-14 lead. However, Yeshiva did not go quietly and cut the deficit to 22-20. The Cardinals refocused and won the next three points, closing it out once again with a Pulinario ace to win the match.
York returns to action on Saturday when they open up CUNYAC play in the first conference tri-match of the season. The Cardinals take on Medgar Evers College and Baruch College at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively on the campus of Medgar Evers College.
